At the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society, we believe every animal is an important part of an ecosystem we all share. Our mission is to provide immediate medical care to injured, sick, or orphaned marine mammals, offering them a second chance at life.
Over 4,000 animals have been successfully rescued with help from caring people like you.
Our rescue team, including trained staff and volunteers, responds quickly to reports of distressed marine animals such as seals, sea lions, sea otters, small cetaceans, and occasionally sea turtles.
Upon receiving a report and after collaborating with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), we dispatch a team to assess the situation and, if necessary, rescue the animal.
Rescued animals that are sick, injured, or orphaned are taken to our Rescue Centre for care. Here, they receive a tailored treatment plan to meet each individual animal's needs.
It's estimated that more than 400 sea lions along the B.C. coast are currently caught in discarded rope, nets, packing bands, and fishing line. If left untreated, these materials often result in a prolonged and painful death.
Fortunately, VAMMR has helped pioneer a way to disentangle and save the lives of these animals.
Learn MoreThe ocean is facing unprecedented challenges due to human activities, including habitat destruction, overfishing, underwater noise, and plastic pollution. As a first responder, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society (VAMMR) is at the forefront of responding to these threats.
Every marine mammal we rescue not only gets a second chance at life but also provides us with invaluable insights into the ocean's health.
