The ocean is facing unprecedented challenges due to human activities, including habitat destruction, overfishing, underwater noise, introduction of novel pathogens and plastic pollution. As a first responder, the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Society (VAMMR) is at the forefront of responding to these threats.
Every marine mammal we rescue not only gets a second chance at life but also provides us with invaluable insights into the ocean's health.
Our work spans from rescuing distressed marine mammals and providing them with state-of-the-art veterinary care, to conducting scientific research, to engaging the community through powerful outreach programs.
Animals needing onsite care are brought to our Rescue Centre located in Vancouver, B.C., where they receive world-class care from our veterinary, animal care and volunteer teams. As the only facility of its kind in Canada, VAMMR is often the only hope for sick, injured or orphaned marine animals. The goal for every patient is a successful rehabilitation and release back into the ocean.
VAMMR consists of a dedicated team of Veterinarians, Registered Veterinary Technologists, animal care professionals, community builders, and volunteers. No one else in Canada, and few facilities around the world, has the skills and expertise of the VAMMR team to help marine mammals.
